CPA Board Member, John Bialecki, has summarized the most recent information from AMERIPEN that might be of interest to CPA Members.
This month’s highlights include:
- The New York State Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit against PepsiCo and Frito-Lay, ruling that manufacturers cannot be held liable for third-party littering or failing to meet internal PCR goals.
- Following Donald Trump's re-election, states are reassessing legislative priorities, with AMERIPEN monitoring federal policy changes impacting EPR, plastics, and recycling.
- U.S. states implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws are addressing e-commerce packaging waste, assigning responsibilities for inner and outer packaging to producers and distributors respectively.
- California's proposed final EPR regulations under SB 54 mandate producer registration by mid-2025, differing from other states by allowing direct reporting to CalRecycle.
- Corporate leaders from major global companies have urged governments to establish binding global rules on plastic pollution at upcoming UN treaty negotiations, advocating for standardized criteria and principles for EPR schemes.
